You can pick any Winamp 2.x skin from the 1001winampskins.com database. If you want to remix a skin that is not currently on our database, you may ask the original author to upload it.
You may NOT remix your own skin -- it has to be someone else's skin. The original skin may be a collaboration by two or more authors, as long as no portion of the skin has been made by yourself.
You may only remix skins you have received permission to remix by the original author. You must also provide us with proof of this permission in order for your remixed skin to be eligible for the contest. Read below on how to obtain this permission and how to provide us with the proof.
You HAVE to provide us with this proof -- this is very important! Your contest entry will NOT be eligible without this proof. Please contact the original author via email using the text below. You may modify any portion of the text, except for the bottom half which must be filled out by the original author and then emailed directly to ¤db¤. You will be notified by ¤db¤ as soon as he has received the proof of permission.
What do I have to do to the skin to make it eligible for the contest?
Your remix MUST be Winamp 2.9-compatible (ie. it must have VIDEO.BMP, GEN.BMP, and GENEX.BMP skinned). This applies whether or not the original skin is Winamp 2.9-compatible. Apart from that, you may alter the original skin in any way that you like, though you may want to take into account the next section...
How will the remixes be judged?
The remixes will all be rated by a panel of judges. Great care is being taken to assemble a panel of judges that is comprised of people who are both well respected in the skinning community, and who represent a wide range of skinning styles and tastes. The list of judges will be announced soon.
The criteria for judging these skins will be similar to what you would expect for a normal skin (aesthetics, creativity, completeness, functionality...) with the addition of these very important criteria:
HOW MUCH OF YOUR OWN SKINNING STYLE IS PRESENT IN THE REMIX:
If you change very little of the original skin (eg. just change some colours around and alter some buttons) or make just a couple of minor improvements, your remix will not be rated highly. What everyone wants to see is your interpretation of the skin - the old skin with a distinct new flavour.
WHETHER, BY LOOKING AT THE REMIX, ONE CAN STILL RECOGNISE THE ORIGINAL SKIN:
Although putting a lot of your own interpretation into the remix is a good thing, you want people to be able to easily see the presence of the original skin somehow - or at least its 'character' - otherwise it defeats the point of making a "remix". If you make what is practically just a new skin containing a few very small allusions to the 'original skin', your skin won't be rated very highly either.
Am I allowed to submit more than one remix into the contest?
Yes. A skinner may enter as many as s/he likes, but if -- after all the judging -- two or more of her skins make it into the top 5, the best-rated one remains and the lower-rated one/s will be removed from prize contention.
